CAI Flashback

As members practice their golf swings and putting prowess in preparation for the 27th Annual Golf Tournament here in Las Vegas on April 28, 2023, can you think of a time when CAI did not have a golf tournament? Probably not, because golf has always been a part of the social fabric of the organization.

In the early days of the chapter, the 1990s, golf was in the form of putting contests coupled with BBQ dinners. The October chapter newsletter recorded that “Thirty people participated in the putting competition. Gary Wood won first place and a 19” remote control color TV. Alex Rios won two free rounds on the putting course and two CAI t-shirts. Gary Lein won $50 cash. Also, Jim Main won the raffle—another portable TV.”

BBQ dinners and putting contests were well attended and one of the favored social activities. Then in 1997 the chapter swung hard, long, and straight toward a full 18-hole tournament. Nevada’s first annual golf tournament was held on Friday, October 11, at Desert Willows golf course with 120 golfers and sunny skies! Here are photos to prove it.
